C-Walk Interview: Scrawler

Tony: First off, an introduction of yourself. Name, age, location, hobbies, orientation etc.
Scrawler: Well my real name is Michael Allen, I’m 19 years old, 20 in august, I’m from Ilford, just outside of East London, UK.  I work full time in Central London doing heating engineering and  have been for 3 years, out of work I go to the gym 3 times a week  and DJ sometimes in clubs in Essex. I also play CODMW2 on PS3 if you think your up for the challenge add me : scrawler09
Tony: COD MW2! Damn, only got it on PC, haha. You DJ? GoSu recently started DJ’ing, did you have any influence on him? Or do you guys not really keep in touch?
Scrawler: Aahhh see everyone’s got scared and jumped on different consoles as soon as they heard Scrawler has a PS3 and is owning everyone . I didn’t even no GoSu DJ’s. Nah I don’t really talk to GoSu, kynam or Rye anymore although I have them all on facebook. The only person I talk to daily is Murkee seeing as he lives round the corner to me lol.
Tony: That’s cool. So how did you come up with the name Scrawler?
Scrawler: Lol, it’s basically a graffiti font that I’ve always liked from when I used to graffiti back in school days and just stole it from there.
Tony: Ah I see. So when did you first find out what Cwalking is? and how?
Scrawler: Ermmm wow the first time I found out about cwalking :l mmm… I was probably 15/16 and I was at Murkee’s one day and we was on YouTube and came across a 3 way with ceewok, slipnslide and vi3tshi3t08 and that’s what first sparked our interest.
Tony: So you and Murkee were good friends before the 5 way?
Scrawler: Yeah man, me and Murkee went to primary school together and kept in contact when he went to a different secondary school. We are basically best friends lol, known him all my life.
Tony: Oh that’s cool. When you first started cwalking, did you go to any sites? maybe thecwalk.com?
Scrawler: Yeh when me and Murkee first started there was 1 site lol, which was thecwalk.com back in the day lol. Since then there are loads of sites popping up such as the one this is for. Quite mad really….
Tony: And did you have any inspirations? any Cwalkers you looked up to? or just kickin’ it solo?
Scrawler: Nah when we first started there where a few people about there was Viet Jr, Ceewok, vi3tshi3t08 and Kyren who were basically our inspiration. When I first saw the speed of VietJr I was amazed but then saw the perfection of Kyren, I then started talking to Kyren on rare occasions and basically watched his tutorials and learned from there because there were no other real tutorials about.
Tony: Yeah they really were the inspiration to many. Also now talking about the London 5 Way meet up. Whose idea was it? How did you get in contact with the other 3 since you didn’t know them? Who organized it etc?
Scrawler: Ermm to be honest I think Murkee got in touch with Gosu and it all sorta flowed from there. I believe he spoke to him on thecwalk.com forum and then exchanged numbers and made a meeting point and the rest of it and yeah… didn’t expect it too have 19million+ views a couple years down the line LOL!
Tony: Yeah haha, so do you still remember that day clearly? Was it fun? Nervous at all?
Scrawler: Ermmm I remember it vaguely, not really nervous just didn’t no what to expect. If I knew the video would be as popular as it is I would have been a bit more nervous, but to me and the rest of the guys I think we thought it was just another Cwalk vid lol.
Tony: True if you knew  19 million people were going to watch it, you might have been feeling a bit nervous! Haha. So how long of cwalking had you done before this meetup?
Scrawler: Lol exactly, er..before the meet up not long man like 4/5months on and off, I think it wasn’t long at all.
Tony: And do you remember who you thought was the one of the more experienced Cwalkers there? I remember thinking to myself when I first saw it that Murkee was one of the faster ones.
Scrawler: The most experienced at the time was Gosu, but the thing is, it’s not all about speed to be totally honest with you, like if you check out EastLa, Spook, they are some of the best Cwalkers about I think and they where slow as hell to be honest. If I could tell people when they ask “what can you teach me I wanna learn bla bla”, because I swear I have about 1000 unread messages on YouTube all saying the same thing, I would say that speed isn’t the answer to everything. To be honest I’d rather be perfect in every move rather than be sloppy and fast.
Tony: Yeah that really is an arguement among cwalkers today. However I think most believe it’s style > speed, which I now think also. When i first watched the 5 way I was still quite noob and thought speed meant expereince xD. Anyway, you still Cwalk now? Or is that the past?
Scrawler: Exactly Cwalking isn’t about speed, it’s about developing your own style and expressing yourself. If everyone thought speed is what it was all about, cwalkers would be the same and it would die out, which is what I think is starting to happen. But as for me Cwalking, maybe sometimes in a club when I see someone busting out with a lil heel toe I might just go and show them the real deal . I have been recognised in clubs as Scrawler though. It’s so weird lol, people asking have you seen this video London 5 Way and I’m like yeah that’s me lol. But  mmmm there maybe a few more vids to come, just have to watch out on youtube.com/scrawler06 and that will keep you updated on the latest vids.
Tony: Do you do any other dances? or just Cwalking?
Scrawler: Not really no, just Cwalking.
Tony: Ahk I see. Also going back to the 5 way video, has that gotten you some “recognition”? Anyone on the streets ever say “Hey it’s Scrawler!” haha.
Scrawler: Lol na hnot really because my face isn’t on the video .
Tony: Ahk, but  im sure at London Cwalk meetups everyone knows who you are .
Scrawler: Lol yeah it’s true people do know who I am. Some people get a bit scared maybe because there mainly younger, until they realise I am just a normal person, lols.
Tony: Haha, so talking about nowadays meetups, what do you think of them? Fun? Do people “idolise” you? xD.
Scrawler: Ermmm they are alright. The last 1 I went to was average. Lots of people but not really idolise, just say hi and most people say they have emailed me on YouTube, little do they know I have not seen the email loooool! but yeah.
Tony: Ahaha, I bet it’s filled with spam! xD. Also what do you think of Cwalking today? much more variations etc.
Scrawler: Ermm yeah well Cwalk is what people make it so it’s changed from how it was but  it’s all down to preference really. I liked how it was but I like some of the new variations and moves that have been made. So it’s a mix and match of old and new.
Tony: Ah true . Lastly, what are you up to these days? job? girlfriend?
Scrawler: These days lol haha ermm just working in central London making my money man.  Had an amazing girlfriend for the last 2 years, going on holiday 22 July with her to Cape Verde, an island off Africa , oh yeah which reminds me, my parents are from Barbados and Jamaica,  ermmm apart from that just saving up for a new car.
Tony: Haha life sounds good for you! . Any shout outs before we finish?
